Before we brought Leo home, one of the things I thoroughly
researched was what kind of food we would be giving him and for how long. We
knew we would be getting a bag of food to bring home when we picked him up so
we made sure to purchase an extra bag of that food to make the transition to his new
food simpler on the stomach. because Leo is
a golden Retriever, we wanted to choose a large breed puppy food that was low
in fat and protein (per our vet). We ended up choosing Blue Buffalo large Breed
Puppy chicken and brown Rice and Leo loved it.
As he got older, we researched a large breed adult food and
went with the blue Buffalo large Breed adult chicken and brown Rice. He liked
it for about 6 months, but his stool was never perfect. It was always on the
softer side. He also started lacking enthusiasm when getting fed. With that
said, among some other things we discovered with Leo, like his never-ending skin
problems, we chose to switch his food again.
We knew grain-free food was out of the question because of its link to Dilated Cardiomyopathy, especially in golden Retrievers. this time around we chose on Holistic select large Breed Adult, partly because it includes gut-healthy probiotics. As soon as we started transitioning Leo to the new food, his stool was noticeably better. As soon as the transition was over, his stool was practically perfect. He also hasn’t had any allergies on his stomach because we started the new food, which is a terrific plus because he didn’t like it when we put the tea tree oil spray on him.
For now, it seems as if Leo is doing better with his new
food, so we’ll stick with that for now. What food do you give your dog? let me
know in the comments below!
